I love a Strat's tone, but I think they are hideous looking guitars. What are the options as far as getting the tone without the looks?

What do you have against them? Admittedly, they're not the best looking guitar, but I have seen a few very sexy ones.

Coil splitting the humbuckers is always a great start.
As far as anything else, hmmm... I've been wondering this myself! I would think tilting the bridge humbucker would help but I'm not sure just how that would affect your normal humbucker tone, and if it would be good or bad. That being said it would improve the Strat tonal quality you're going for when you split the humbuckers. Somewhat.

EH sells a pedal called the "Knock Out" that can make a Les Paul type guitar sound more like a Strat. Check it out on YouTube.

I just thought the stain on that first one looked poorly done, and not really a good stain choice in my opinion. But I love that style of finish on a strat.
